EHR Incentive Payments

EHR Incentives

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act) authorizes the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to award incentive payments to eligible professionals who demonstrate Meaningful Use of a certified electronic health record (EHR). It pays to get started early! Providers must have participated early — in 2011 or 2012 — in order to receive the maximum incentive. Payments are slightly reduced for eligible providers who begin participation in 2013.

Meaningful Use

The Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs provide a financial incentive for achieving “meaningful use,” which is the use of certified EHR technology to achieve health and efficiency goals. This section provides an overview of the Stage 1 EHR meaningful use core and menu objectives for eligible professionals (EPs) as outlined by CMS – which are intended to set a baseline for electronic data capture and information sharing.

EHR Software Considerations and Resources

2012 – 2013 Tax Incentives

With the recently passed American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 (also known as the Fiscal Cliff Act),  there have been significant changes to Tax Code 179.

EHR Software Replacement

Many physician groups are finding a need to replace or convert their current electronic medical records software or medical billing software system for any number of reasons. If your existing software has been discontinued or lacks robust clinical charting capabilities, you will need to consider your data conversion options in addition to your EHR software choice.

Paying for your EHR Software

Your practice can achieve a rapid return-on-investment for your EHR software investment when you leverage the available cost savings. We can help you combine EHR Meaningful Use Incentives, Tax Incentives, and ensure that your physicians and users have daily “elbow support” to maximize user efficiency with the software.

Web Based EMR vs. Client/Server EMR

In general, EMR software hosted by an ASP (application service provider or data center) has a smaller upfront cost because you are basically leasing the software licenses on a subscription basis. ASP systems also are referred to as Saas EMR (Software as a Service) or Web-Based EMR – and all three terms (ASP, Web-Based, and Saas) are interchangeable in practice.
